Leading with humility and dignity

Dr Boureima Hama Sambo is a visionary leader with more than 30 years of field, regional and global health experience. Dr Sambo is currently the WHO Representative (WR) in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Prior to his current position, he served as the WR to the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, to Gabon and ad interim to Rwanda. He also held various positions at the WHO Regional Office for Africa and served as the Director of the Climate and other Determinants of Health Department at the WHO headquarters.
From his humble beginnings, his aptitude, competency, and commitment has led him to assume strategic and executive leadership roles. Throughout his career, Dr Sambo has been a champion for primary health care approach to address key health issues such as NCDs, health security, reproductive and child health, and equitable access to affordable health care. Dr Sambo received his medical degree from the Faculte des Sciences de la Sante of the University of Niamey, Niger; and his MPH and PhD in Epidemiology from University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center, Oklahoma, USA. He also completed a certificate in Diabetology from the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center, Oklahoma, USA.
Dr Sambo is the recipient of several awards and recognitions. He is committed to utilizing his platform to advance public health research and dialogue. He has authored and co-authored several peer-reviewed papers in professional journals.
